Settle It Now, With Love

ਕਹੈ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਖੇਤ ਹੀ ਕਰਹੁ ਨਿਬੇਰਾ ॥
kahai kabeer sunhu ray santahu khayt hee karahu nibayraa.
Says Kabir, listen, O Saints: settle your accounts in this farm.
ਅਬ ਕੀ ਬਾਰ ਬਖਸਿ ਬੰਦੇ ਕਉ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਭਉਜਲਿ ਫੇਰਾ ॥੩॥੭॥
ab kee baar bakhas banday ka-o bahur na bha-ojal fayraa. ||3||7||
O Lord, please forgive Your slave now, in this life, so that he may not have to return again to this terrifying world-ocean. ||3||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Kabir says: listen, holy people, settle your account right here in the field.

Forgive Your servant now, in this life, so I do not return to the frightening sea of the world.

Settle your account in this life, and ask for forgiveness now.
The deeper layer

You can set things right now, in this life.

Kahai kabeer sunhu ray santahu — Kabir says, listen, holy people. Khayt hee karahu nibayraa — settle your accounts right here in the field. The field is this life, right where you stand.

Ab kee baar bakhas banday ka-o — this time, forgive Your servant. It asks for grace in this very life. Bahur na bha-ojal fayraa — so there is no going round again in the frightening world-ocean.

Think of making up with a friend the same day, before bedtime. You do not carry the fight into tomorrow. Forgiveness is ready today. Nobody has to keep going in circles.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you could gently set right today rather than carrying it any longer?
