Without the Fear of God, how can the Fearless Lord be obtained? ||1||

In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

No one has ever seen the Fearless One, O seeker.

Without awe, how could anyone reach the Fearless One?

Awe is the doorway; wonder is how the heart first draws near.
The deeper layer

One Creator, known by the Guru's grace: Ik Onkar Satgur Prasaad stands at the top of Kabir's song. The words go to a bairaagee, someone who has left home life to seek God. Two refrains keep coming back, like a chorus: bairaagee-arhay, a fond way of saying "O seeker," and vanaahambai, a sound that carries the tune.

Anbha-o kinai na daykhi-aa: no one has seen the Fearless One with ordinary eyes. Bin bhai anbha-o ho-ay: without bhai, how could the Fearless One be reached?

Bhai here means awe and reverence, not being scared. It is the hush you feel standing under a huge, starry sky. That wonder is what opens the heart.

A Question to Sit With

What is something so vast or beautiful it fills you with quiet awe?
