When Worry Quiets

ਚਿੰਤਾ ਜਾਲਿ ਤਨੁ ਜਾਲਿਆ ਬੈਰਾਗੀਅੜੇ ॥
chintaa jaal tan jaali-aa bairaagee-arhay.
Anxiety is burned, and the body is burned, O renunciate,
ਜੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਿਰਤਕੁ ਹੋਇ ਵਣਾਹੰਬੈ ॥੫॥
jay man mirtak ho-ay vanaahambai. ||5||
only if one lets his mind become dead. ||5||

In plain words

Worry burns like a fire, and the body burns with it, O seeker.

That fire goes out only when the mind dies to its wanting.

When the grasping mind grows quiet, worry loses its grip.
The deeper layer

Chintaa jaal tan jaali-aa: worry is like a fire that heats up the whole body. Chintaa means worry. Jay man mirtak ho-ay: that heat dies down only when the mind becomes mirtak.

Mirtak is a strong word that literally means lifeless. Here it means the grabbing, noisy part of the mind goes completely still. It is all about the inside of the mind, and never about harming the body.

Think of a snow globe. Shake it, and everything swirls. Set it down, and the snow settles. When the busy "me" settles like that, calm has room to come in.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing that helps your worried thoughts settle down?
