The Guru Makes It Possible

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਬੈਰਾਗੀਅੜੇ ॥
satgur bin bairaag na hova-ee bairaagee-arhay.
Without the True Guru, there can be no renunciation,
ਜੇ ਲੋਚੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ਵਣਾਹੰਬੈ ॥੬॥
jay lochai sabh ko-ay vanaahambai. ||6||
even though all the people may wish for it. ||6||

In plain words

Without the Guru there is no letting go, O seeker,

even if everyone longs for it.

Letting go comes through the Guru, however much you wish for it alone.
The deeper layer

Satgur bin bairaag na hova-ee: without the True Guru, bairaag does not happen. Bairaag means letting go, no longer ruled by wants.

Jay lochai sabh ko-ay: even if everyone longs for it. You cannot just will yourself into it. It is like learning to swim. Wanting it very much is not enough. You need a good coach in the water with you.

Real freedom from craving is learned from a guide you can trust.

A Question to Sit With

Who is a guide in your life who has helped you learn something you could not force on your own?
