Chasing Empty Things

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਬਹੂ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਨੀ ਰਚਿਓ ਧੰਧੈ ਝੂਠ ॥
saaDhsangat kabhoo nahee keenee rachi-o DhanDhai jhooth.
You never joined the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. You are engrossed in false pursuits.
ਸੁਆਨ ਸੂਕਰ ਬਾਇਸ ਜਿਵੈ ਭਟਕਤੁ ਚਾਲਿਓ ਊਠਿ ॥੧॥
su-aan sookar baa-is jivai bhatkat chaali-o ooth. ||1||
You wander like a dog, a pig, a crow; soon, you shall have to get up and leave. ||1||

In plain words

You never joined the Sangat; you got tangled up in false, busy work.

Like a dog, a pig or a crow you wander about, and soon you must get up and go.

The next shiny thing can quietly eat a whole life.
The deeper layer

A life can slip by in two ways.

Saadhsangat kabhoo nahee keenee — you never joined the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. Rachi-o dhandhai jhooth — you got tangled in false, busy work.

Su-aan sookar baa-is jivai — like a dog, a pig, or a crow, you wander around. These animals roam, always sniffing for the next scrap. It is a picture of restlessness. Think of opening the fridge again and again, looking for something, not even hungry.

Bhatkat chaali-o ooth — wandering, you soon have to get up and go. The visit here is shorter than we think.

A Question to Sit With

What are you always hungry for the next of?
