The Trap of Looking Down

ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਦੀਰਘੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਅਉਰਨ ਕਉ ਲਗ ਮਾਤ ॥
aapas ka-o deeragh kar jaanai a-uran ka-o lag maat.
You believe that you yourself are great, and that others are small.
ਮਨਸਾ ਬਾਚਾ ਕਰਮਨਾ ਮੈ ਦੇਖੇ ਦੋਜਕ ਜਾਤ ॥੨॥
mansaa baachaa karmanaa mai daykhay dojak jaat. ||2||
Those who are false in thought, word and deed, I have seen them going to hell. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You think you are great, and that others are small.

I have seen people who are false in thought, word and deed going to a place of suffering.

Puffing yourself up only builds a wall around your own light.
The deeper layer

Looking down on others is a trap.

Aapas ka-o deeragh kar jaanai — you think you are big. A-uran ka-o lag maat — and you think others are small. This is the ego that puffs itself up and shrinks everyone else.

Mansaa baachaa karmanaa — in thought, word, and deed. When all three go crooked, Kabir says, they are dojak jaat, headed for a place of darkness. Think of building a wall around yourself so no one can come near. It keeps others out, but it also blocks your own sunlight.

That is the point here. Ego is less like a crime and more like a wall. A crooked heart shuts out its own light.

A Question to Sit With

When was the last time you made someone else feel small — and why?
