Habits That Waste the Days

ਕਾਮੀ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੀ ਚਾਤੁਰੀ ਬਾਜੀਗਰ ਬੇਕਾਮ ॥
kaamee kroDhee chaaturee baajeegar baykaam.
The lustful, the angry, the clever, the deceitful and the lazy
ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਤੇ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਿਰਾਨੋ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਸਿਮਰਿਓ ਰਾਮੁ ॥੩॥
nindaa kartay janam siraano kabhoo na simri-o raam. ||3||
waste their lives in slander, and never remember their Lord in meditation. ||3||

In plain words

People ruled by craving and anger, the sly, the tricksters and the idle

spend their whole lives putting others down, and never once remember the One.

A life spent tearing others down has no room left for anything real.
The deeper layer

Some habits quietly eat up our days.

Kaamee krodhee chaaturee baajeegar baykaam — craving, anger, sly cleverness, tricking others, and laziness. The verse names these as habits that steal a life. The habits are the problem, not the people.

Nindaa kartay janam siraano — life runs out while tearing others down. Nindaa means slander, saying mean or false things about people behind their backs. Kabhoo na simri-o raam — and they never remember the One.

Think of a backpack. If you fill it with rocks, there is no room for your lunch. A day filled with putting others down has no room left for anything good.

If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.

A Question to Sit With

Which habit eats the most of your days?
