Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 2
Verse 4 of 5

Comfort and Power Are Only Borrowed

ਸਜੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਪਟੁ ਹਢਾਏ ॥
saj kaa-i-aa pat hadhaa-ay.
He adorns his body and ress in silk robes.
ਫੁਰਮਾਇਸਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
furmaa-is bahut chalaa-ay.
He issues all sorts of commands.
ਕਰਿ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਸੋਵੈ ॥
kar sayj sukhaalee sovai.
Preparing his comfortable bed, he sleeps.
ਹਥੀ ਪਉਦੀ ਕਾਹੇ ਰੋਵੈ ॥੩॥
hathee pa-udee kaahay rovai. ||3||
When he falls into the hands of the Messenger of Death, what good does it do to cry out? ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Someone dresses in fine silk, gives orders all day, and sleeps on the softest bed.

Yet all of it is borrowed, held only for a little while.

So it is wise to tend the heart now, gently, while the day is here to do it.

Fine things are borrowed; a tended heart is what you carry with you.
The deeper layer

Comfort, status, and command are all on loan, and crying out at the end changes nothing. Now, while there is time and light, is when the heart gets tended.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you could tend to today instead of putting it off?
