Aching to Meet the One I Love

mai har birhee har naam hai ko-ee aan milaavai maa-ay.
I feel the pains of love and yearning for the Lord, and the Name of the Lord. If only someone would come and unite me with Him, O my mother.
tis aagai mai jod-rhee mayraa pareetam day-ay milaa-ay.
I bow in humble devotion to one who inspires me to meet with my Beloved.
The almighty and merciful True Guru unites me with the Lord God instantaneously. ||2||

In plain words

I long for the One the way you long for someone you love and miss.

If only someone would lead me to meet Him! I bow to whoever brings me close; the kind Guru joins us without delay.

Longing for what is good is itself a kind of prayer.
The deeper layer

I miss the One the way you miss someone you love.

Mai har birhee — I am a birhee, someone who aches from being apart. This ache of love is called birha. Ko-ee aan milaavai maa-ay — if only someone would bring us together, O mother. Think of waiting at the airport for a grandparent you have not seen in years.

Tis aagai mai jodrhee — I fold my hands before whoever helps me meet my Beloved. And the kind True Guru joins us dhil na paa-ay, without any delay.

A Question to Sit With

Is there someone or something you miss in a way that feels like love?
