Verse 4 of 5

Two Awarenesses Becoming One

gur purkhai purakh milaa-ay parabh mil surtee surat samaanee.
The Guru, the Primal Being, has united me with the Primal Lord God. My consciousness has merged into the supreme consciousness.
vadbhaagee gur sayvi-aa har paa-i-aa sugharh sujaanee.
By great good fortune, I serve the Guru, and I have found my Lord, all-wise and all-knowing.
manmukh bhaag vihooni-aa tin dukhee rain vihaanee. ||3||
The self-willed manmukhs are very unfortunate; they pass their life-night in misery and pain. ||3||

In plain words

The Guru joined my awareness to the great awareness, and they merged.

By great luck I served the Guru and found the wise, all-knowing One. Those who turn away spend their nights restless.

When your attention rests in what is real, it feels like coming home.
The deeper layer

Our small awareness joins the great awareness, until the two become one.

Mil surtee surat samaanee — awareness melts into awareness. Surat means attention, the part of you that notices. The Guru joins our little noticing with the great knowing of the One. It is like one small candle's light blending into the sunlight.

Vadbhaagee gur sayvi-aa — by great good luck, I served the Guru and found the wise One.

The verse also names the manmukh. That is someone who follows only their own wants. Tin dukhee rain vihaanee — their life-night passes in pain. Picture someone lying awake in the dark, restless. The same Guru and the same light are there for them too, whenever they turn.
