Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 22
Verse 3 of 5

I Searched, and the Saints Held It

mai man tan khoj dhandholi-aa ki-o paa-ee-ai akath kahaanee.
I have searched through and through my mind and body; how can I attain this Unspoken Speech?
sant janaa mil paa-i-aa sun akath kathaa man bhaanee.
Meeting with the humble Saints, I have found it; listening to the Unspoken Speech, my mind is pleased.
mayrai man tan naam aDhaar har mai maylay purakh sujaanee. ||2||
The Lord's Name is the Support of my mind and body; I am united with the all-knowing Primal Lord God. ||2||

In plain words

I searched all through my mind and body - how do I reach this story words cannot hold?

I found it by meeting the saints, the Guru's humble people; hearing it, my mind was glad. Now the Naam is the ground under my body and mind.

Some things you find by sitting with the Guru's people.
The deeper layer

The search runs everywhere inside, and the answer turns up among the saints.

Mai man tan khoj dhandholi-aa — I searched all through my mind and body. How can I reach this story that words cannot hold? Then comes the answer. Sant janaa mil paa-i-aa — I found it by meeting the saints, the Guru's humble people.

Think of trying to learn to swim from a book. You can read every page and still not float. Then you get in the pool with a friend who swims, and it starts to make sense.

After that, the Name holds up the seeker's mind and body. The seeker is joined with purakh sujaanee, the all-knowing One.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people who help you find what you are looking for?
