Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The One is fearless and without form; the Naam is True.
To keep His Name is the finest thing you can do in this world. In its light, even the fear of death loses its grip - it cannot come near a heart that rests in the One.
The One is fearless, formless and true, and remembering the Name is the best work in the world.
Nirbha-o means without fear. Nirankaar means without form, with no shape you could draw. Sat naam means the Name is true. These words echo the Mool Mantar, the opening lines of the Guru Granth Sahib that describe the One.
Jag meh saraysat ootam kaam: in this world, remembering this Name is the highest, finest work.
The verse then says the Messenger of Death, the old enemy, is struck down and cannot come near the One's servant. The heart of it is fear. Many people fear death. A heart resting in the Fearless One is no longer ruled by that fear. Think of a small child in a thunderstorm, safe in a parent's arms. The storm is still there, but the fear loses its grip.
What helps you feel brave when you are afraid?
