The One Grace Makes Us Turn

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥

He continually chants the Lord's Chant; meditating on the Lord, one finds peace.

gur parsaadee har ras aavai jap har har paar langhaa-ee jee-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
By Guru's Grace, the sublime essence of the Lord is obtained. Meditating on the Lord, Har, Har, one is carried across. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

The one He blesses remembers Him, says His Name every day, and finds peace.

By the Guru's grace the sweetness comes. Remembering the One, you are carried across.

Peace comes to the heart that turns, a little each day.
The deeper layer

Turning toward the One is itself a gift.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the song. Jis no kirpaa karay so dhi-aavai: only the one given kirpaa (kindness, grace) remembers the One. Even the wish to pray is a gift.

That person chants the Name every day and finds peace. Gur parsaadee har ras aavai: by the Guru's grace, the ras comes, the sweet taste of the One. Think of a favorite song that gets sweeter each time you hear it. Remembering the One each day is a bit like that.

And that remembering carries you across, like a bridge over a wide river.

A Question to Sit With

What is a small daily thing that brings you peace?
