Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Day and night I hold the Maker's Name, the One who has carried across every servant and lover.
Ask all the old scriptures, the Puranas and the Vedas. Nanak says: it is the Naam that sets you free.
Day and night, hold the Maker's Name, because the Name sets people free.
Ha-o an-din naam la-ee kartaaray: I take the Maker's Name an-din, day and night. The Maker has carried every servant and every bhagat across. A bhagat is a devotee, someone who loves the One.
Then he points to the old books. Das ath chaar vayd sabh poochhahu: ask the eighteen Puranas and the four Vedas, the great old scriptures of India. He names them with respect. His point is where they all lead. Jan naanak naam chhadaa-ee: it is the Name that frees you. Think of asking many good teachers one question and hearing the same answer each time.
The name "Nanak" at the end is the signature. The Gurus sign their verses with it.
What is one thing you would like to hold in mind both morning and night?
