Only the Maker Is Without Fear

ਸਗਲ ਸਮਗ੍ਰੀ ਡਰਹਿ ਬਿਆਪੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਡਰ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰਾ ॥

sagal samagree dareh bi-aapee bin dar karnaihaaraa.

The entire expanse of the Universe is in the Fear of God; only the Creator Lord is without this Fear.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤਨ ਕਾ ਸੰਗੀ ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੧॥

kaho naanak bhagtan kaa sangee bhagat soheh darbaaraa. ||4||1||

Says Nanak, God is the companion of His devotees; His devotees look beautiful in the Court of the Lord. ||4||1||

Sagal samagree dareh bi-aapee: the whole universe moves in awe. Bin dar karnaihaaraa: only the Maker is without fear.

Then Nanak adds a warm line. The One is bhagtan kaa sangee, the companion of those who love the One. And they shine in the One's presence.

Think of the biggest, strongest kid on the playground choosing to be your friend. You walk beside them, and you are no longer afraid of anything.

That is where the shabad lands. The fearless One is not far away and cold. The fearless One is a friend who walks beside those who love.
