The Mind Heated by Its Own Fires

The body is a furnace, and the mind is the iron within it; the five fires are heating it.

ko-ilay paap parhay tis oopar man jali-aa sanHee chint bha-ee. ||3||
Sin is the charcoal placed upon it, which burns the mind; the tongs are anxiety and worry. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Sometimes my mind feels like iron sitting in a hot furnace, warmed by the pull of wanting, anger, and worry.

Anxious thoughts poke at it like tongs, and the heat can feel like too much.

But iron in a fire is not being punished; it is being made ready to change.

Being heated is not being punished; sometimes it is being made ready to change.
The deeper layer

The five fires are the panch, desire, anger, greed, attachment, and pride, the coals are wrongdoing, and the tongs are chintaa, anxiety. Heat like this is also how iron is made ready to change, and in the next verse the heated iron becomes gold. Ego is a fever to be cured, not a crime to be judged.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel heated up inside, what helps you cool and steady again?
