Verse 3 of 5

The Bait That Looks Like a Treat

jaalee rain jaal din hoo-aa jaytee gharhee faahee taytee.
The night is a net, and the day is a net; there are as many traps as there are moments.
ras ras chog chugeh nit faaseh chhootas moorhay kavan gunee. ||2||
With relish and delight, you continually bite at the bait; you are trapped, you fool - how will you ever escape? ||2||

In plain words

Every hour can hold a little trap, something shiny that says grab me, you will be happy.

And it is easy to nibble, again and again, until I feel stuck and tangled.

Seeing the trap for what it is, that is how the tangle loosens.

Seeing the hook inside the treat is how you slip free of it.
The deeper layer

The net is the constant pull of tempting distractions; the bait (chog) is the quick pleasure that hooks us. Everyone knows this pattern. Awareness itself is the escape: once you see the hook inside the treat, its pull weakens.

A Question to Sit With

What is a shiny trap that is easy for you to keep nibbling at?
