You are entangled in association with your enemies, and the enjoyment of pleasures; your soul is burning up with them! ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Why do you not keep your own One in mind?

You are wrapped up in fun with the very things that work against you, and they leave your heart burning.

The tugs that promise fun are the ones that wear you out.
The deeper layer

Keep your own One close, because the pulls inside you quietly burn up your peace.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the whole shabad, the idea everything else circles around. The heart is asked: why not keep your own One close? Bairee means enemies. Here the enemies are the pulls inside us, like greed or always wanting more.

When we spend time with those pulls, they feel like fun. But they burn up our peace, jee-araa jaaras. It is like a phone game that promises "just one more level." An hour later you feel tired, not happy. Keeping the One close is how the heart gets its peace back.

A Question to Sit With

What is a habit that leaves you more tired, not less?
