Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 32
Verse 1 of 5

Why Chase What Slips Away?

maaroo mehlaa 5.
Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:
He is all-powerful, the Master of all virtues, but you never sing of Him!
chhod jaa-ay khin bheetar taa ka-o u-aa ka-o fir fir Dhaavas ray. ||1||
You shall have to leave all this in an instant, but again and again, you chase after it. ||1||

In plain words

The One is strong and holds every goodness - why not sing of Him?

You will set down all the rest in a moment, yet you keep running back to it again and again.

Why keep chasing what you will set down anyway?
The deeper layer

We keep chasing things that slip away, and forget the One who never does.

The One is samrath, which means strong enough to do anything. The One is also sarab gun naa-ik, the keeper of every good quality. Yet we hardly ever sing about the One. Instead we keep running after things we will have to set down khin bheetar, in a single moment.

Think of building a sandcastle right at the edge of the waves. It is fun, but the tide will take it soon. The verse is not scolding. It is a gentle nudge to spend our love on what lasts.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you chase that you would be fine without?
