Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 32
Verse 4 of 5

Do Not Trade What Lasts for a Short Dream

ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਜਾਸੁ ਸੁਨਤ ਭਵ ਤਰੀਐ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਰੰਗੁ ਨ ਲਾਵਸਿ ਰੇ ॥
jis kaa jaas sunat bhav taree-ai taa si-o rang na laavas ray.
Praising Him, you shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean, and yet, you have not fallen in love with Him!
ਥੋਰੀ ਬਾਤ ਅਲਪ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਕੀ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਅਟਕਾਵਸਿ ਰੇ ॥੩॥
thoree baat alap supnay kee bahur bahur atkaavas ray. ||3||
This meager, short-lived dream, this thing - you are engrossed in it, over and over again. ||3||

In plain words

Just hearing His praise carries you across the deep water - and still your heart has not fallen for Him!

This short, thin dream - you keep getting caught on it, over and over.

Do not get stuck on a short dream and miss what lasts.
The deeper layer

Loving the One carries us across life's rough water, yet we keep getting stuck on a short dream.

Bhav is the wide, rough ocean of the world. Just hearing the One's praise, jis kaa jaas sunat, helps us cross it. Still, the heart does not fall in love. Instead it gets caught on thoree baat alap supnay kee, a small thing, a short dream. And it gets caught again and again.

Think of waking up from a dream about winning a huge prize. For a second it felt real, and then it is gone. The verse invites us to trade that dream for something real that stays.

A Question to Sit With

What is one "short dream" that sometimes distracts you?
