The Saints Beyond Storms

ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਰਹਤ ਹਹਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤਾ ॥

The Lord's Saints are immaculately pure; they are beyond pleasure and pain, beyond greed and attachment.

My mind obtains the dust of their feet, when the Lord God shows mercy.

Says Nanak, I met the Perfect Guru, and then the anxiety of my mind was removed. ||4||

In plain words

There are pure-hearted ones who have grown steady. Joy and sorrow, grabbing and clinging, no longer toss them around.

When the One is kind, I get to be near them, and something settles in me.

Nanak says, when I met the Perfect Guru, the worry lifted right off my mind.

Near steady, kind people, our own worry settles.
The deeper layer

Being near steady, good-hearted people helps our own worries settle.

Sant means saints, the pure-hearted ones of the One. The verse says they live beyond harakh sog, joy and sorrow. Greed and clinging do not push them around.

The speaker says, "My mind gets the dust of their feet." That is an old way to say, "I stay close to them, humbly." This happens when the One is kind.

Think of a calm friend during a stormy day at school. Everyone is upset. But your friend is steady, and just sitting next to them helps you calm down too. Then Nanak says he met the Perfect Guru, the true Teacher. Taa utree man kee chintaa — then the worry lifted off his mind.

A Question to Sit With

Who helps you feel calm just by being near them?
