Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 43
Verse 5 of 5

No One Wise Alone

so mili-aa je har man bhaa-i-aa.
He alone meets the Lord, who is pleasing to His Mind.
so bhoolaa je parabhoo bhulaa-i-aa.
He alone is deluded, who is deluded by God.
nah aaphu moorakh gi-aanee.
No one, by himself, is ignorant or wise.
je karaavai so naam vakhaanee.
He alone chants the Naam, whom the Lord inspires to do so.
tayraa ant na paaraavaaraa.
You have no end or limitation.
jan naanak sad balihaaraa. ||4||1||17||
Servant Nanak is forever a sacrifice to You. ||4||1||17||

In plain words

Whoever is dear to the One comes to meet the One. Whoever the One lets wander, wanders.

No one is clever all on their own, and no one is foolish all on their own — it all moves within the One.

Whoever is moved to sing the Naam, sings it. You have no edge and no end. Servant Nanak says, I give myself to You, forever.

No one is wise or foolish alone; it all moves within the One.
The deeper layer

Nobody is wise or foolish all on their own. Everything moves inside the One.

The verse says whoever pleases the One comes to meet the One. And whoever the One lets wander, wanders. Nah aaphu moorakh gi-aanee — no one, by themselves, is a fool or a wise person.

This is a humble way to see people. Think of a class where some children find reading easy. It is tempting to think, "I am smart, and they are not." But your teachers, your family and your chances all helped you. None of us did it alone. So there is no reason to look down on anyone.

The one who sings the Name sings because the One moved them to. Then the verse looks up in wonder. Tayraa ant na paaraavaaraa — "You have no end and no far shore." Nanak says he would give himself to that, again and again.

A Question to Sit With

When has help or wisdom seemed to come from beyond you?
