Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 44
Verse 4 of 6

Loved More Than Family

ਏਕਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਪਿੰਡ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥
aykeh paraan pind tay pi-aaree.
Some love this wealth even more than their body and breath of life.
ਏਕ ਸੰਚੀ ਤਜਿ ਬਾਪ ਮਹਤਾਰੀ ॥
ayk sanchee taj baap mehtaaree.
Some collect it, forsaking their fathers and mothers.
sut meet bharaat tay guhjee taa kai nikat na ho-ee khalee-aa. ||3||
Some hide it from their children, friends and siblings, but it will not remain with them. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Some come to love money more than their own breath, chasing it past even mother and father.

They tuck it away from the people closest to them — and still, in the end, it slips through their fingers.

What we grip too tightly still slips away.
The deeper layer

Some people love money more than anyone, and still it leaves them.

Some love wealth more than their own body and breath. Some pile it up and walk away from their mother and father for it. Some hide it from their children, friends, and brothers and sisters. Taa kai nikat na ho-ee khalee-aa — still, it does not stay near them.

The pull of money is real. The verse does not pretend it isn't. But it is like holding water in your hands. The tighter you squeeze, the faster it runs out. The reward never lasts.

A Question to Sit With

What are you holding a little too tightly?
