What Won't Come Along

aykai saram kar gaadee gadhai.
Some collect wealth, and bury it in the ground.
aykeh supnai daam na chhadhai.
Some cannot abandon wealth, even in their dreams.
The king exercises his power, and fills his money-bags, but this fickle companion will not go along with him. ||2||

In plain words

Some people gather riches and bury them away; some can't loosen their grip even in their sleep.

Even a king who fills his treasure-bags finds that this restless friend, wealth, simply won't follow him where he is going.

Even a king's riches won't follow him home.
The deeper layer

Money cannot come with us when we go.

Some people bury their riches in the ground. Aykeh supnai daam na chhadhai — some cannot let go of money even in their dreams. A king fills his money bags too.

Taa kai sang na chanchal chalee-aa — this restless companion will not go along with him. Chanchal means fickle, never staying still. Wealth is like a friend who is only around while you are winning.

Think of points in a video game. They feel so important while you play. When you log off, they stay behind in the game.

A Question to Sit With

What matters more to you than things you can own?
