The Support of Mind and Body

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਆਧਾਰਾ ॥
raam naam man tan aaDhaaraa.
The Lord's Name is the support of my mind and body.
ਜੋ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jo simrai tis kaa nistaaraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Whoever meditates on Him is emancipated. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Naam of the One holds up my mind and my body.

Whoever remembers the Naam is carried across.

The Name is the support that holds up mind and body.
The deeper layer

The Name holds up both my mind and my body.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad, where the song stops to say its main point. Raam naam man tan aadhaaraa — the Name is the support of my mind and body. Aadhaaraa means support, like the frame that holds up a house. The Name here means the One's presence, remembered with love.

Jo simrai tis kaa nistaaraa — whoever keeps it close is carried across. Think of a bridge over a wide river. You do not have to swim. You walk across on what holds you up.

A Question to Sit With

What holds you up on a hard day?
