Why Put On a Show?

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
maaroo mehlaa 5.
Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:
ਕਤ ਕਉ ਡਹਕਾਵਹੁ ਲੋਗਾ ਮੋਹਨ ਦੀਨ ਕਿਰਪਾਈ ॥੧॥
kat ka-o dahkaavahu logaa mohan deen kirpaa-ee. ||1||
Why do you try to deceive others, O people of the world? The Fascinating Lord is Merciful to the meek. ||1||

In plain words

Why try to fool the people around you, or pretend to be what you are not?

The One — the heart-enchanting One — is already tender toward the humble; there is no one to impress.

You don't need to impress the One who already loves you.
The deeper layer

Why put on a show?

Kat ka-o dahkaavahu logaa — why try to fool people? The verse asks it plainly. Mohan means the one who charms the heart, a name for the One. Deen means the humble, the ones with nothing to show off. Mohan deen kirpaa-ee — the heart-charming One is already kind to the humble.

So there is no one to impress. Think of posting a perfect photo online to look happy. The people who really love you do not need the photo. They already know you. The One knows us even better, so there is no need to pretend.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you feel you have to put on a show?
