The Brave One Who Shelters

ਐਸੀ ਜਾਨਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
aisee jaan paa-ee.
This is what I have come to know.
ਸਰਣਿ ਸੂਰੋ ਗੁਰ ਦਾਤਾ ਰਾਖੈ ਆਪਿ ਵਡਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saran sooro gur daataa raakhai aap vadaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The brave and heroic Guru, the Generous Giver, gives Sanctuary and preserves our honor. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Here is what I have come to know.

The Guru is the brave one, the Giver. The Guru shelters whoever comes, and keeps their honor safe.

True bravery is the courage to shelter and protect.
The deeper layer

The Guru is the brave one who gives shelter.

This is the "pause" line, the rahao. It is the center of the shabad. It names the Guru as sooro, the brave one. Maaroo is the raag of warriors, a tune once sung before battle. But the bravery here is different. It is not about beating an enemy. Saran sooro gur daataa — the Guru, the Giver, is brave in giving shelter. Raakhai aap vadaa-ee — the Guru keeps our honor safe.

Think of the kid who sits with the new student at lunch when nobody else will. That takes real courage. Being brave means standing guard over someone else.

A Question to Sit With

Who has been brave enough to protect you?
