Dear as My Own Breath

ਮੋਹਨੁ ਲਾਲੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਨਾ ॥

My Enticing Beloved is very dear to my mind and my breath of life.
ਮੋ ਕਉ ਦੇਹੁ ਦਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
mo ka-o dayh daanaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He blesses me with His gift. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My heart-winning Beloved is as dear to me as my mind and my breath.

The Beloved blesses me with this gift.

The Beloved can be as dear to you as your own breath.
The deeper layer

My Beloved is as dear to me as my own breath.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad. Mohan laal mayraa pareetam man paraanaa — my heart-winning, precious Beloved is dear to my mind and my breath. Mohan means the one who wins your heart. Paraan means the breath of life.

Mo ka-o dayh daanaa — the One gives me gifts. Think of breathing. You never stop to earn your next breath. It just comes. The One's giving is like that.

A Question to Sit With

What is as close to you as your own breathing?
