Verse 5 of 5

Even When I Slip, Your Kindness Holds

ਲੂਣ ਹਰਾਮੀ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਲਾਲਾ ਬਖਸਿਹਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
loon haraamee naanak laalaa bakhsihi tuDh vadi-aa-ee.
I have been untrue to myself, but Nanak is Your slave; please forgive him, by Your glorious greatness.
aad jugaad da-i-aapat daataa tuDh vin mukat na paa-ee. ||4||6||
Since the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages, You have been the merciful and generous Lord. Without You, liberation cannot be attained. ||4||6||

In plain words

I have not always been true to my own best self, and I can admit that honestly.

Nanak says: still I am Yours, and I trust Your kindness to forgive me and set me right.

From the very beginning You have been merciful, and that mercy is what frees me.

You are held by kindness even on the days you slip.
The deeper layer

Loon haraamee, being untrue to the One whose salt you eat, is a strong self-reproach, offered as honest admission. The answer is bakhsihi, grace that forgives and lifts. Freedom (mukat) comes not from a spotless record but from mercy that was there from the beginning of time.

A Question to Sit With

Who shows you kindness even when you make mistakes?
