ko-ee aakhai aadmee naanak vaychaaraa. ||1||
Some call him a mere mortal; O, poor Nanak! ||1||

In plain words

Nanak says: some people call me a ghost; some say I am a wild spirit.

Some call me just an ordinary man. Poor Nanak!

A heart full of love can look strange to those who cannot see inside it.
The deeper layer

Ko-ee aakhai bhootnaa ko kahai baytaalaa: some call him a ghost, and some call him a wild spirit. Others call him aadmee, just an ordinary man. Then comes a funny, smiling sigh: Nanak vaychaaraa, poor Nanak!

The names show how the world misreads someone who loves God with their whole heart. Think of a friend so happy about something that others think they have gone strange. What looks odd from outside is a heart that is full. Inside, it is overflowing with love.

Guru Nanak keeps it light and warm. Still, being called names can sting. If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever loved something so much that others did not quite understand?
