Happily Lost in Loving the One

ਭਇਆ ਦਿਵਾਨਾ ਸਾਹ ਕਾ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਉਰਾਨਾ ॥
bha-i-aa divaanaa saah kaa naanak ba-uraanaa.
Crazy Nanak has gone insane, after his Lord, the King.
ਹਉ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ha-o har bin avar na jaanaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I know of none other than the Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak says: I have gone crazy for my King, carried away by love.

I know no one but the One.

To be joyfully lost in love is a way of being found.
The deeper layer

Being lost in love for the One is a happy kind of crazy.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the song. Bha-i-aa divaanaa saah kaa Nanak ba-uraanaa means Nanak has gone crazy for his King.

Divaanaa and ba-uraanaa both mean crazy, or carried away. In Gurbani, the Guru's words, they are happy words. They mean being wrapped up completely in love for God. Think of a fan who can only talk about their favorite team. There is no shame in it. It is the joyful heart of loving devotion.

Ha-o har bin avar na jaanaa: I know no one but the One. Being lost in love like this is the surest way of being found.

A Question to Sit With
