Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 60
Verse 3 of 3

Nothing We Grip Stays

jo sampat apnee kar maanee chhin meh bha-ee paraa-ee.
That wealth, which he believes to be his own, in an instant, belongs to another.
kaho naanak yeh soch rahee man har jas kabhoo na gaa-ee. ||2||2||
Says Nanak, this still really bothers my mind - I never sang the Praises of the Lord. ||2||2||

In plain words

The things I call mine were only ever passing through my hands. In a blink they belong to someone else.

Nanak says: the one treasure worth gathering is singing the praise of the One, because that is the treasure that stays.

What you own is borrowed; what you love in the One is kept.
The deeper layer

Possessions are sampat that becomes paraa-ee, another's, in an instant. Singing the praise of the One is the lasting treasure; choose it now, clear-eyed and without shame.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you value that money could never buy?
