Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 62
Verse 3 of 9

The Name Is Every Sacred Place

ਹਰਿ ਪੜੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਾਰਾ ॥
har parhee-ai har bujhee-ai gurmatee naam uDhaaraa.
Study the Lord's Name, and understand the Lord's Name; follow the Guru's Teachings, and through the Naam, you shall be saved.
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
gur poorai pooree mat hai poorai sabad beechaaraa.
Perfect are the Teachings of the Perfect Guru; contemplate the Perfect Word of the Shabad.
ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਕਾਟਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
athsath tirath har naam hai kilvikh kaatanhaaraa. ||2||
The Lord's Name is the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, and the Eradicator of sins. ||2||

In plain words

Read the Name, understand the Name, follow the Guru's teaching: the Naam lifts a life.

You do not have to travel far to find holy ground. Holding the Name is itself standing in every sacred place at once, and it washes the heart clean.

Holding the Name is standing on holy ground wherever you are.
The deeper layer

Har parhee-ai har bujhee-ai means read about the One and understand the One. Gurmatee means by the Guru's teaching. Taken in this way, the Name lifts a whole life.

Then comes the big idea. Athsath tirath har naam hai: the Name is the sixty-eight holy places. Those were famous places people traveled far to visit. The verse moves the holy place into the heart. It is like having a whole library on your tablet. You do not have to go anywhere.

The Name also cuts away kilvikh, our faults and wrongs. This is not turning away from anyone's tradition. It is finding the holy right inside.

A Question to Sit With

Can a place inside you feel as sacred as any temple?
