Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 62
Verse 6 of 9

The One Trade Worth Making

ਸਚਾ ਵਖਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਸਚਾ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥
sachaa vakhar naam hai sachaa vaapaaraa.
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the true object, the true commodity.
ਲਾਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
laahaa naam sansaar hai gurmatee veechaaraa.
The Naam is the only true profit in this world. Follow the Guru's Teachings, and contemplate it.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਨਿਤ ਤੋਟਾ ਸੈਸਾਰਾ ॥੫॥
doojai bhaa-ay kaar kamaavnee nit totaa saisaaraa. ||5||
To work in the love of duality, brings constant loss in this world. ||5||

In plain words

Of everything I could spend my days gathering, the Naam is the one worth trading in.

The Naam is the profit of a whole life. Chasing things that pull me two ways at once just leaves me emptier each day.

The only investment that never loses value is the Name.
The deeper layer

Gurbani often uses the picture of a trader. Sachaa vakhar naam hai: the Name is the true vakhar, the goods worth trading. Laahaa naam sansaar hai: the Name is the only real laahaa, the profit, in this world.

It is like the difference between saving your pocket money and spending it on candy that is gone in a minute.

Doojai bhaa-ay means the love of "the second," loving things apart from the One. When we put our lives into passing things, we get totaa, loss, every day.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you spend time on that adds to your life?
