Verse 1 of 9

Awe That Melts All Fear

maaroo mehlaa 1.
Maaroo, First Mehl:
sabad marai taa maar mar bhaago kis peh jaa-o.
One who dies in the Word of the Shabad conquers death; otherwise, where can you run?
jis kai dar bhai bhaagee-ai amrit taa ko naa-o.
Through the Fear of God, fear runs away; His Name is Ambrosial Nectar.
maareh raakhahi ayk too beeja-o naahee thaa-o. ||1||
You alone kill and protect; except for You, there is no place at all. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When the ego quietly lets go into the Word, the fear of endings loses its grip.

A deep wonder toward the One chases smaller fears away, sweet as nectar. In the One alone is every shelter; there is nowhere else I need to run.

Awe toward the One quietly dissolves the fear of endings.
The deeper layer

Sabad marai means dying to the ego in the shabad, which conquers the fear of death. Bhai here is reverent awe that drives out lesser fear. Maareh raakheh ek too: every life rests in the One alone, the only refuge.

A Question to Sit With

When has wonder at something bigger than you made a worry shrink?
