The Bird That Flies Home

In the cage of divine love, the parrot, speaks.

It pecks at the Truth, and drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar; it flies away, only once.

Meeting with the Guru, one recognizes his Lord and Master; says Nanak, he finds the gate of liberation. ||8||2||

In plain words

Imagine a bird that lives inside a cage made of love, singing sweet and true.

It feeds on Truth and drinks deep, and one day it simply spreads its wings and flies home. Nanak says: meeting the Guru, I come to know the One I belong to, and a wide-open door of freedom appears.

A life fed on Truth turns its ending into a flight home.
The deeper layer

The parrot in the cage of prem, love, feeds on Truth. Its single flight (udai ta ekaa vaar) is the soul's one natural departure: a flight home. Mokh du-aar is the gate of liberation.

A Question to Sit With

What does home mean to you beyond a building?
