The Treasure Is in the Home of the Body

ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਰਹੈ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਏਕਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
aas niraas rahai sani-aasee aykas si-o liv laa-ay.
Amidst hope, the Sannyaasi remains unmoved by hope; he remains lovingly focused on the One Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਤਾ ਸਾਤਿ ਆਵੈ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਏ ॥
har ras peevai taa saat aavai nij ghar taarhee laa-ay.
He drinks in the sublime essence of the Lord, and so finds peace and tranquility; in the home of his own being, he remains absorbed in the deep trance of meditation.
His mind does not waver; as Gurmukh, he understands. He restrains it from wandering out.

garihu sareer gurmatee khojay naam padaarath paa-ay. ||8||
Following the Guru's Teachings, he searches the home of his body, and obtains the wealth of the Naam. ||8||

In plain words

The true seeker stays steady, not tossed around by every hope and want, resting their whole heart on the One.

Drinking that deep peace, the mind stops wandering and comes to rest at home, inside. Searching my own heart with the Guru's teaching as a lamp, I find the treasure of the Name that was here all along.

The treasure you are seeking is already at home, inside you.
The deeper layer

The treasure you are looking for is already inside you.

Aas niraas means staying steady in the middle of hopes. The true seeker has hopes, but is not pushed around by them. Their love stays on the One.

Har ras peevai — they drink in the sweetness of the One, and peace comes. Nij ghar taarhee laa-ay — they rest deep in their own inner home. The mind stops wobbling and wandering.

The last line is the key. Garihu sareer gurmatee khojay — with the Guru's teaching, they search the home of the body. There they find the naam padaarath, the treasure of the Name.

There is an old story of a musk deer. It smells a lovely scent and runs all over the forest looking for it. It never guesses the scent comes from its own body. We are like that. What we search for everywhere is already within us, waiting to be found.

A Question to Sit With

What might you find if you looked inward instead of everywhere else?
