The Weight Lifts Away

ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਕਿਉ ਤਰੈ ॥
sansaar bhavjal ki-o tarai.
How can he cross over the terrifying world-ocean?
gurmukh naam niranjan paa-ee-ai afri-o bhaar afaar tarai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The Gurmukh obtains the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord; the unbearable load of sins is removed. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

How can anyone cross the wide, wild ocean of the world?

Turning to the Guru, you receive the pure Naam, and the heavy load no one can lift alone is lifted away.

Receiving the Name lifts the weight you have been carrying.
The deeper layer

Life can feel like a wide ocean, and the Naam carries you across.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the song. Sansaar bhavjal ki-o tarai — how can anyone cross the frightening ocean of the world? It is a question everyone asks at some point.

The answer follows. Gurmukh naam niranjan paa-ee-ai — turning to the Guru, you receive the naam niranjan, the spotless Naam. Then afri-o bhaar afaar, the heavy load nobody can lift alone, falls away.

Think of hiking up a hill with a backpack full of rocks. Someone kind lifts the pack off your shoulders, and suddenly you can walk again.

A Question to Sit With

What is a weight you would love to feel lifted off your shoulders?
