Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 69
Verse 10 of 13

What Gives a Life Its Meaning

The record of one's past actions cannot be erased; who else is to blame for one's birth and death?
bin gur baad jeevan hor marnaa bin gur sabdai janam jaray. ||9||
Without the Guru, life and death are pointless; without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, life just burns away. ||9||

In plain words

The past is the past; no use pointing fingers about how things came to be.

What matters is now: with the Guru lighting the way, a life fills with meaning. Without the Guru, the days can just slip past unused. So I let the Guru's Word give my days their purpose.

Stop blaming the past; let the Guru's Word give today its meaning.
The deeper layer

The Guru's Word gives a life its meaning.

Poorab janam ko laykh na mit-ee — the record of what came before cannot be erased. Kaa ka-o dos Dharay — so who is there to blame? Pointing fingers changes nothing.

Bin gur baad jeevan — without the Guru, life slips by wasted. Bin gur sabdai janam jaray — without the Guru's Word, a lifetime just burns away. With the Guru's Word, each day can be lived on purpose.

Think of a candle. It can burn alone in an empty room, or it can light a page so someone can read. The flame is the same; the use is different.

A Question to Sit With

What gives your days a sense of purpose?
