Chasing Only Fun Leaves Us Empty

ਖੁਸੀ ਖੁਆਰ ਭਏ ਰਸ ਭੋਗਣ ਫੋਕਟ ਕਰਮ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਕਰੇ ॥
khusee khu-aar bha-ay ras bhogan fokat karam vikaar karay.
The pleasures enjoyed in happiness bring ruin; acting in corruption is useless indulgence.
naam bisaar lobh mool kho-i-o sir Dharam raa-ay kaa dand paray. ||10||
Forgetting the Naam, and caught by greed, he betrays his own source; the club of the Righteous Judge of Dharma will strike him over the head. ||10||

In plain words

Living only for the next thrill, and cutting corners to get it, ends up hollow.

When I forget the Name and let greed lead, I turn away from my own deepest self. And I feel the loss.

Living only for thrills rings hollow; you can always turn back.
The deeper layer

Living only for fun ends up feeling empty.

The verse warns about chasing pleasure and cutting corners to get it. The word vikaar means the wrong turns that pull us off course. Fokat means hollow, like a nut with nothing inside.

Think of eating a whole bag of candy. It is exciting for a few minutes. Then your tummy hurts and you feel worse than before.

The verse also says that forgetting the Name and letting greed lead means losing your mool, your root, your own source. It is like a plant pulled out of its soil.

The verse uses a strong old picture here: Dharam Raa-ay, the judge of right and wrong, bringing his punishment. The meaning underneath is simple. When we turn away from our own deepest self, we feel the loss. And the door back is always open. We can turn around any time.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between fun that fills you and fun that leaves you empty?
