Verse 5 of 5

Love That Sees the Good in Everyone Else

ਤਉ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
ta-o dayvaanaa jaanee-ai jaa saahib Dharay pi-aar.
He alone is known to be insane, when he falls in love with his Lord and Master.
ਮੰਦਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪ ਕਉ ਅਵਰੁ ਭਲਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੭॥
mandaa jaanai aap ka-o avar bhalaa sansaar. ||4||7||
He sees himself as bad, and all the rest of the world as good. ||4||7||

In plain words

This joy grows when I fall in love with my Master.

Then I stay humble, and I see the good in everyone around me.

The more your heart fills with love, the more good you see in others.
The deeper layer

One more sign of this loving "crazy": jaa saahib Dharay pi-aar, when someone falls in love with the Master.

Then mandaa jaanai aap ka-o avar bhalaa sansaar: they see themselves as low and the whole world as good. That is not hating yourself. It is humility. Humility means not ranking yourself above anyone. Think of a team captain who cheers for every player instead of bragging.

This is what love for the One grows into. The more you love the One, the more you honor every person, because each one carries that same One.

A Question to Sit With

How might looking for the good in others change how you treat them?
