ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
maaroo mehlaa 1.
Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਨਾ ਜਾਣਾ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ਨਾ ਜਾਣਾ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥
naa jaanaa moorakh hai ko-ee naa jaanaa si-aanaa.
I do not believe that anyone is foolish; I do not believe that anyone is clever.
ਸਦਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੈ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਾਤਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣਾ ॥੧॥
sadaa saahib kai rangay raataa an-din naam vakhaanaa. ||1||
Imbued forever with the Love of my Lord and Master, I chant His Name, night and day. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
I have stopped sorting people into smart and silly.
Colored in the love of the One, I keep the Name close all day and all night, and that is enough.
You can set down the habit of ranking people as smart or silly.
The whole game of ranking can be set down: naa jaanaa moorakh... naa jaanaa si-aanaa — I do not judge anyone foolish or clever. In place of that sorting comes something steadier: sadaa saahib kai rangay raataa, always colored in the love of the One, keeping the Name near an-din, night and day.
A Question to Sit With
What would change if you stopped deciding who is clever and who is not?
