ਏਹਾ ਵੇਦਨ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਕਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
ayhaa vaydan so-ee jaanai avar ke jaanai kaaree jee-o. ||1||
He alone knows the pain of this love; what does anyone else know about its cure? ||1||

In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

When your heart fills up with love for the One, you settle into an easy, natural peace.

There is a sweet ache that comes with loving deeply. Only the heart that feels it understands it — and only the Beloved knows how to soothe it.

Deep love carries a sweet ache that only the Beloved knows how to soothe.
The deeper layer

The Ashtapadee opens under the Mangalacharan — the invocation Ik Onkar Satgur Prasaad, "One Creator, by the Guru's grace." A heart in which paraym man vasaa-ay, love has come to dwell, rests in sahj subhaa-ay, natural ease. Then the great image of the whole song: ayhaa vaydan — this love is a kind of ache, a sweet pain, and only the one who feels it knows it; only the Beloved knows its kaaree, its cure. Love and healing are the twin threads here.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever loved something so much that missing it and enjoying it felt mixed together?
