Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 73
Verse 10 of 11

Only the Name Travels With You

gurmukh jinee naam na paa-i-aa.
Those who have not become Gurmukh, and who have not found the Naam, the Name of the Lord
manmukh birthaa janam gavaa-i-aa.
- those self-willed manmukhs waste their lives uselessly.
agai vin naavai ko baylee naahee boojhai gur beechaaree jee-o. ||9||
In the world hereafter, nothing except the Name will be of any assistance; this is understood by contemplating the Guru. ||9||

In plain words

A heart turned only toward itself can let precious days slip by unnoticed.

When we move on from here, it is not our things or titles that come along — only the Name we kept close travels with us.

Only the Name we keep close travels with us when we move on.
The deeper layer

The manmukh, the self-turned heart, can let a life pass birthaa, unnoticed. The gentle memento mori: agai vin naavai ko baylee naahee — on the journey onward, nothing but the Naam is a companion. The road ahead is a journey, and the Naam walks it with you.

A Question to Sit With

If only the good you carry inside came with you, what would you most want to have gathered?
