Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 73
Verse 9 of 11

Some Strut, Some Grow Still

ik bharam bhoolay fireh ahaNkaaree.
Some are deluded by doubt; they strut around egotistically.
iknaa gurmukh ha-umai maaree.
Some, as Gurmukh, subdue their egotism.
sachai sabad ratay bairaagee hor bharam bhulay gaavaaree jee-o. ||8||
Attuned to the True Word of the Shabad, they remain detached from the world. The other ignorant fools wander, confused and deluded by doubt. ||8||

In plain words

Some walk through life puffed up, tossed around by doubt.

Others quiet the me-first voice and grow steady, colored in the True Word. They turn toward the Guru, and the strutting quiets down.

The steady heart feeds stillness over strutting.
The deeper layer

Ik bharam bhoolay fireh ahankaaree — some wander, puffed with pride and tossed by doubt; iknaa gurmukh haumai maaree — others quiet the ego. Those sachai sabad ratay are bairaagee, steady and unclinging. Both groups are people facing in different directions, and anyone can turn.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel a boast rising, what helps you choose stillness instead?
