Sent for Jewels, Don't Come Home With Dust

ਰਤਨ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਬਨਜਨਿ ਆਇਓ ਕਾਲਰੁ ਲਾਦਿ ਚਲਾਇਓ ॥੨॥
ratan javayhar banjan aa-i-o kaalar laad chalaa-i-o. ||2||
You have come to trade in gems and jewels, but you have loaded only barren soil. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You came into this life to trade in jewels — kindness, love, remembering the One.

It would be a shame to fill your cart with plain dust instead. Choose what shines.

You are here to gather jewels, so do not fill your cart with dust.
The deeper layer

You came here to trade in jewels, so don't go home with a cart of dirt.

Ratan javayhar banjan aa-i-o — you came to trade in gems and jewels. Kaalar laad chalaa-i-o — but you loaded up barren, salty soil. The jewels are the good things we gather inside: kindness, love, and remembering the One. The dirt is a life spent only on what does not last.

Picture a child sent to the market with money for good food. The child comes home with only a bag of sand. The choice is simple, and it is ours to make.

A Question to Sit With

If your days were a shopping cart, what jewels would you want to fill it with?
