In This Shelter, Even Death Loses Its Fear

ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਉਪਾਇਓ ਸਰਣਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਗਹੀ ॥
sansaar saagar jin upaa-i-o saran parabh kee gahee.
He created the world-ocean; I seek the Sanctuary of that God.
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਰਾਧੇ ਜਮਕੰਕਰੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਨ ਕਹੀ ॥੨॥
gur parsaadee parabh araaDhay jamkankar kichh na kahee. ||2||
By Guru's Grace, I worship and adore God; the Messenger of Death can't say anything to me. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One who made this whole wide ocean of a world is the One whose shelter I have stepped into.

By the Guru's grace I hold the One dear, and death has nothing to say to me. Resting in the One, that door feels like a homecoming.

Rest in the One, and even death loses its fear — it becomes a homecoming.
The deeper layer

The One who upaa-i-o, created the world-ocean, is the saran, the shelter, I have entered. By the Guru's grace, worshipping the One, jamkankar kichh na kahee — the Messenger of Death has nothing to say. Death becomes a door that loses its dread for the heart resting in the One: a homecoming.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel safe and unafraid when you think about big, hard-to-understand things?
