Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 80
Verse 3 of 8

Awake at Last in the Sangat

ਜਾਗਤ ਸੂਤਾ ਭਰਮਿ ਵਿਗੂਤਾ ॥
jaagat sootaa bharam vigootaa.
The mortal sleeps, even while he is awake; he is being plundered by doubt.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈਐ ਮੀਤਾ ॥
bin gur mukat na ho-ee-ai meetaa.
Without the Guru, liberation is not obtained, friend.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਤੁਟਹਿ ਹਉ ਬੰਧਨ ਏਕੋ ਏਕੁ ਨਿਹਾਲੀਐ ॥੩॥
saaDhsang tuteh ha-o banDhan ayko ayk nihaalee-ai. ||3||
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the bonds of egotism are released, and one comes to behold the One and only Lord. ||3||

In plain words

It is possible to be wide awake and still asleep inside, pulled here and there by confusion.

Without the Guru, my friend, no one is set free.

In the Sangat, the tight knot of ego loosens,

and the eyes open to the One who was here all along.

You can be awake on the outside and still asleep within; the Sangat wakes you.
The deeper layer

You can be wide awake and still be asleep inside.

Jaagat sootaa — sleeping while awake. It means living on autopilot. Bharam vigootaa — being robbed by doubt. Think of scrolling a phone for an hour and then not remembering one thing you saw. Your eyes were open, but you were somewhere else.

Bin gur mukat na ho-ee-ai meetaa — without the Guru, friend, there is no freedom. Saadhsang, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — is where the knot loosens. The knot is ha-o, the ego, the feeling that "I am separate from everyone." In the Sangat it quietly comes undone. Then the eyes open to the One who was there all along.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel awake and present?
