Verse 4 of 8

Seeing the One in Every Heart

ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਤ ਬੰਧਾ ਨਹ ਕਰੈ ਤ ਨਿੰਦਾ ॥
karam karai ta banDhaa nah karai ta nindaa.
Doing deeds, one is placed in bondage; but if he does not act, he is slandered.
ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਮਨੁ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਚਿੰਦਾ ॥
moh magan man vi-aapi-aa chindaa.
Intoxicated with emotional attachment, the mind is afflicted with anxiety.
gur parsaad sukh dukh sam jaanai ghat ghat raam hi-aalee-ai. ||4||
One who looks alike upon pleasure and pain, by Guru's Grace, sees the Lord in each and every heart. ||4||

In plain words

Do something, and you can get tangled in it; do nothing, and people find fault.

When the mind is caught in wanting, worry follows close behind.

But the one who meets joy and pain with the same steady heart sees the One shining in every single heart.

An even heart sees the One in every person it meets.
The deeper layer

You can never win the game of what people think.

Karam karai ta bandhaa — if you act, you get tied up in what you did. Nah karai ta nindaa — if you do nothing, people find fault. Nindaa means blame or bad talk. It is like being the referee in a game. Whatever call you make, someone in the stands is unhappy.

Moh magan man vi-aapi-aa chindaa — a mind lost in clinging fills with worry.

Freedom does not come from getting the balance just right. It comes from an even heart. Sukh dukh sam jaanai — seeing joy and pain the same way. This steady gaze sees the same One in everyone. Ghat ghat raam — the One is in every heart.

A Question to Sit With

Can you picture the same light inside someone you find difficult?
