Verse 3 of 8

Nothing Made of Gold Goes With You

ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਭਈਆ ਬੇਬਾ ॥
sang na ko-ee bha-ee-aa baybaa.
No brothers or sisters can go with them.
ਮਾਲੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਵਞੇਸਾ ॥
maal joban Dhan chhod vanjaysaa.
Leaving behind their property, youth and wealth, they march off.
ਕਰਣ ਕਰੀਮ ਨ ਜਾਤੋ ਕਰਤਾ ਤਿਲ ਪੀੜੇ ਜਿਉ ਘਾਣੀਆ ॥੩॥
karan kareem na jaato kartaa til peerhay ji-o ghaanee-aa. ||3||
They do not know the kind and compassionate Lord; they shall be crushed like sesame seeds in the oil-press. ||3||

In plain words

When the journey moves on, no brother or sister, no gold or wealth travels with us.

All the things we gathered stay behind.

What we can carry is knowing the kind and gentle One; that goes with us anywhere.

Only love and remembrance travel with you, nothing made of gold.
The deeper layer

When life's journey moves on, we cannot pack a suitcase. Sang na ko-ee bha-ee-aa baybaa means no brother or sister goes along. Maal joban Dhan chhod vanjaysaa: property, youth and money all stay behind.

The verse ends with a hard picture. A person who never came to know the kind One is squeezed like sesame seeds in an oil-press.

Under that picture, the teaching is warm and clear. Our things do not follow us, but our bond with the kind and caring One does. It is like a friendship that lasts longer than any toy you ever owned. That bond is the treasure worth gathering.

A Question to Sit With

What would you want to carry with you that isn't a thing?
